Bodies Revealed

February 28, 2008

I have been wanting to go to the Bodies Revealed exhibition in Sacramento for weeks and weeks now, so since I had an afternoon meeting in Sacramento on Challenge Way (very close to the exhibition) - I convinced Richard to go with me that evening.

Bodies Revealed is a groundbreaking exhibition that gives the public the unique opportunity to see first-hand the inner workings of our bodies through authentic, preserved human body specimens. In addition to providing a closer look at the skeletal, muscular, respiratory and other systems in the human body, the exhibition encourages healthy lifestyle choices. As a health educator - this exhibition was right up my alley. I was enlightened and fascinated...and I educate about the body everyday! Richard even was awe-struck at every turn in the exhibition. Go to this...you will be empowered to take care of your fascinating and complex body; but hurry, I think it leaves Sacramento in March.

Deceptively Delicious!

February 26, 2008

For any of you health-conscious Mommy's out there that do not own Deceptively Delicious yet - I'm encouraging you to purchase it and use it!!! All of the recipes that I have made so far are not only delicious (as the title indicates), but also full of vegetables and thus essential nutrients a growing toddler requires.

My latest recipe success were donuts (baked, of course) and made with pumpkin and sweet potato puree, in addition to wheat flour. The result = a success. Gannon and Richard loved them! I even made enough to bring to the office - a success there too!

Puddles, Puddles, Everywhere Puddles!

February 24, 2008

Even though the weather outside wasn't the best...we made the best out of it! Gannon got his rain gear on and we played and splashed in the puddles. He giggled and giggled. What a boy! After playing in the cold, we headed inside for a warm bath, soup and a movie. I figure that there won't be too many more winter mornings ahead; especially since my bulbs in the backyard are coming up and reminding me that it won't be too much longer until wonderful Spring!

In this photo - Gannon pretended that he was a fisherman that just caught a big shark!

Gray Lodge Nature Walk

February 23, 2008

I am a member of the Sutter County Hiking Club and this month, the hike was at Gray Lodge. A group of us met early Saturday morning - it was a crisp and beautiful morning...absolutely perfect for a nature walk. There were no mosquito's, but tons of birds. I'm so glad that I brought along our binoculars to look at the birds. Gannon was in awe - this was the first time he had used the binoculars...he thought the morning was very "cool dude!" (He got that phrase from Crush on Nemo!)
I highly recommend this walk. Not only was it a refreshing activity; we accumulated 2-1/2 miles of walking - not bad!!! The company of friends made the morning even better!!!

Happy Valentine's Day

February 14, 2008

Gannon brought home from school tons of Valentine's from his friends. We sat down at looked at each and every one of them - the surprising part was that he knew who each of the Valentine's were from even before I read the name. His memory is crazy - very similar to his Daddy's photogenic-type of recollection abilities.

I made Richard, Gannon and my parents a delicious fondue dinner and after that...it was time for Gannon to open the many presents that cupid left behind for him.

A few days before Valentine's Day, my friend (or should I say Gannon's friend) Anne gave him a wonderful gift - a little lavender plant. We have planted it and are awaiting the arrival of this beautiful herb. Thanks Anne!

Getting ready for Heart Day

February 13, 2008
Gannon had his first "homework" assignment...the Daring Ducks (the name of his 2-year old class at New Adventures Preschool) were given a white piece of paper with a large heart on it. The directions read, "Decorate the heart, cut it out and bring back to school". We'll - we were certainly up to the task! Gannon and I sat down at the table in his bedroom and began our project. We used the crazy hat that I wore to the Fremont-Rideout Heart Walk as the inspiration for our art project. Gannon colored, I cut and glued and walla! Our masterpiece!!!

This art project pumped up our creative juices, so we had to keep going. Next project - cupcakes.!!! Gannon is a great help in the kitchen. He loves to break the eggs (yes, I go through dozens) and mix. Here is video of him preparing for his cooking adventure. He gets so excited to help Mommy in the kitchen - enjoy! And needless to say - the cupcakes were a hit with Daddy!

A Beautiful Day at the Sacramento Zoo!

February 9, 2008

A Day at the Zoo!!!

The weather was gorgeous Saturday! There was no doubt that we had to spend the day outside...and what better way to "hang out" than to "hang with the animals" of the Sacramento Zoo! Gannon had a wonderful time (and Mommy and Daddy did too)!

WOW...Gannon's Wing Span is just about the same size as a
Swallow-Tailed Kite.

Gannon talked just like the monkeys!!! Just Listen!!!
and made new friends too...
What a GREAT day!

Yuba City man brings home MMA title belt

Richard Blake of Yuba City recently won the mixed martial arts No Limits heavyweight title in Dallas, Texas.

Surviving his biggest fight in more ways than one, Yuba City's Richard Blake has his sights set on capturing a second mixed martial arts championship. Blake, 32, stunned Zane Frazier of Hollywood with a technical knockout in the first round of their scheduled five-round bout for the No Limits world heavyweight championship on Jan. 26 in Dallas, Texas. "Honestly, hands down that was my hardest fight," Blake said Saturday. Blake still sports a black eye from where Frazier connected with a solid punch that bloodied and closed the left eye. He still has a broken finger on his left hand. "My ribs to this day still hurt me," said Blake, an injury incurred when he was kicked in the chest. The fact that Blake, who wrestled at Franklin Elementary, Gray Avenue Intermediate and Yuba City High, came out on top is testament to his determination, because he was the decided underdog going into the bout. "Everyone was calling me 'little man' at the weigh-in," Blake said. Blake weighed 218 pounds with his clothes on. Frazier weighed in at 261 pounds. Blake also is barely over 6-feet tall, while Frazier is 6-6. "He had a reach that was (18 inches) longer than mine," Blake said. "They were calling the match David vs. Goliath," added Blake's trainer, Hector Andrade, a former fighter himself, who lives in Yuba City. Blake obviously trained for fighting a much larger opponent, but couldn't anticipate what actually happened in the cage. Andrade said their strategy "was to chop him down like a tree" so Blake could better compete. Frazier, though, took Blake down early in the bout, but the Yuba City fighter managed to hold him off, eventually forcing the referee to call for both combatants to come to a standing position. When Frazier tried another kick, Blake caught his leg and forced the big man to the mat. He then started flailing away. "I threw the most perfect punch," Blake recalled, aiming it at Frazier's face. "And I ended up hitting him in the chest instead." Frazier tried to cover but Blake kept getting his punches in. Finally, the referee stopped the bout. Frazier went into the match with a 22-10 record and boasted a 17-2 record as a kickboxer. Blake, who has been competing in mixed martial arts for only two years, is now 9-3. "He was the main card," Blake said. "No one thought he was going to lose." Now Blake has to decide whether to defend the title or drop down and try to capture a second belt in the 205-pound division. "My next fight definitely will be for a title," Blake said. "We're hoping to sign the contract Monday," Blake said, adding the fight would be held in Cancun, Mexico, in late March and telecast on MTV. If he continues his success in the ring, Blake has high hopes of achieving another goal by the end of the year. "I want to fight in the UFC," Blake said. His trainer thinks he can get there. "He's got the will and the determination to go far," Andrade said. Blake already is battling Ultimate Fighting Championship combatants, adding he has been told his next match definitely will be against a UFC-caliber opponent. The UFC is on the top tier in the world of mixed martial arts, along with Pride and World Extreme Cagefighting. No Limitss is on a level below with Valor and the World Combat Organization. While he has the memory of winning his first world title, Blake ecalled another special moment. He sat in the stands watching other bouts with country music artist Brooks and Dunn. "I couldn't believe it," Blake said. "I was sitting with Brooks and Dunn and talking with them." But Blake's wife Michelle and 2-year-old son Gannon are his biggest fans, and he uses them for inspiration. In fact, no matter how tired he is after training under Andrade's regime, Blake still takes Gannon for a 3-mile run each night. "He won't go to sleep at night unless I put him in the stroller and take him on a run," Blake said. Contact sports reporter Richard Myers at 749-4714 or rmyers@appealdemocrat.com.
