Public Health Week 2008

April 9, 2008
Sutter County Health Education wrapped-up the 2008 National Public Health Week by celebrating "Healthy Families = Healthy World" through hosting a Family Fun Night at Regency Park. We had a wonderful time and hope that the families who came to the event had a great time too and were inspired to have fun with their children.
For those of you that assisted me with this event and/or attended thank you!
Please enjoy a few photos from the event.

The following is the article featured in the Appeal-Democrat relevant to the activity mentioned in this blog post...

The Macarena can't go out of style if the whole family does it together.
That was the idea behind the Sutter County's Public Health Department's Family Fitness Fun Night on Wednesday evening at Regency Park in Yuba City.
"The general idea is to encourage fun and movement, especially for families," said Michele Blake, program coordinator for the health department.
The event had participants spend time at 10 different stations, each with a different health-encouraging activity. And yes, one of them was doing the Macarena, the repetitive dance sequence done to the song of the same name popular in the mid- to late-1990s.
Other stations included jumping rope, yoga, and making a list of healthy activities families could do together.
Tammy Graham looked on as a group of kids learned about the sugar content of various beverages. She brought her four kids and two neighboring children to the event. She heard about the event from a friend and thought it would be something healthy to do as a family.
"I knew it would be a good thing," she said.
She wanted to use the event to come up with ways for the family to do healthier activities together.
"I'd like to do (activities) more regularly now that the weather's better," she said.
The event was part of Sutter County's participation in National Public Health Week. The theme is "Healthy Families, Healthy World," which focused on staying active and preventing heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
Blake said she hoped that family fitness events in the county could expand beyond just the Public Health Week.
"We'd like to see these take a life of their own in the community," she said.
